Learn/Play with Clay

We welcome visitors to our Seaside Studio & Shop.

Introductory classes are intimate and customized to the skill level and interests of our guests and quoted on an individual basis.

Whether you are a beginner, looking to play with clay, or have some experience and would like to hone your skills, we'd love to hear from you.

Optimal session length is 4 hours. Morning and Afternoon options available. Materials included.

Wheel-throwing & Hand building available.

Send us an email telling us what your Learning/Playing with Clay Wish List looks like and we'll try to make your dream come true!

Note: Because of the many steps required in pottery production ( making, drying time, trimming, glazing, bisque & glaze kiln firings), introductory classes focus on the "working with clay" experience, not production of a final piece of pottery per se. If you do make something you fall in love with, we'll figure out options for how to finish your treasure and get it home to its maker!

FAQs

  • Learn/Play sessions are customized and tailored to our guests. We say "Learn/Play" because learning can be hard work and some folks simply want to try something new, without necessarily mastering the skillset. That's the play part. We'll make sure you have fun whatever your goals, and time flies when you're in the studio with clay. Come prepared to get dirty and unleash your creativity. The studio is well equipped and all materials and tools will be provided. Make a day of it and plan for a beachwalk and meal at a local restaurant while you're in Rose Bay.

  • Introductory classes are 4 hour sessions and focus on the experience of working with clay, both hand-building and throwing on the wheel. We work with stoneware clay in the studio which requires several stages & steps before it is considered finished. Greenware requires drying time before it can be trimmed, bisque fired, glazed and finish fired so you will not be able to make pottery to take home in one introductory session. Multiple making sessions can be booked if you would like to make pieces from start to finish. If you do fall in love with a piece you've made in your intro session, we can discuss finishing and shipping options.

  • In addition to the Pottery Studio, Sand Dollar Cottage is a fully furnished 4 bedroom seaside rental. If you are interested in a weekend or weeklong pottery workshop, including accommodation for up to 6 guests, please contact us via email to explore Stay & Learn/Play options. You can access photos of the Cottage here.
